SIRNAK, Turkey
A sergeant was martyred in southeastern Turkey on Friday in an armed attack by the PKK terrorist organization.
According to security sources, a group of terrorists opened fire on security forces in Sirnak's Cizre district.
The soldier, who was heavily wounded in the shelling, died in Cizre State Hospital.
The Turkish General Staff confirmed the death in a statement on Friday, extending its condolences to the families of all martyred soldiers and the Turkish people.
The PKK -- designated a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- renewed its armed campaign against the Turkish state in late July. Since then more than 240 members of the security forces have been martyred.
