Turkey detains 104 EU-bound migrants in Edirne province
The migrants are from Tunisia, Syria, Palestine and Burma, official sources say.
EDIRNE, Turkey
Authorities detained 104 migrants trying to cross the border illegally into EU countries from the northwestern Turkish province of Edirne, official sources told the Anadolu Agency Thursday.
Teams of the Edirne Gendarmerie Command detained the migrants in Edirne’s Bosnakoy and Kemalkoy villages, and Uzunkopru, Meric, Ipsala and Lalapasa districts, the sources said.
The EU-bound migrants were from Tunisia, Syria, Palestine and Myanmar, the sources added.
The detained migrants were sent to the Edirne Police Department’s Foreign Branch.
Edirne is one of the two Turkish provinces, together with Kirklareli, which is on the border of two EU countries, Greece and Bulgaria.
With the Mediterranean Sea turning to be the deadliest sea route from the Middle East and Africa to the EU countries, Turkey remains the shortest overland road towards EU for African and Middle Eastern countries.
Greece and Bulgaria are reportedly building fence walls in some parts of their border with Turkey to curb the flow of migrants.
