ANKARA
Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday that Syrians kept fleeing their country and coming to Turkey, adding that there were 83,260 Syrians currently staying in Turkey.
Replying to questions of reporters at a weekly press briefing, Selcuk Unal said that UN-Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi came to Turkey upon an invitation by Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu during their meeting in New York.
Unal said that Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin E. Dempsey who visited Turkey as the guest of Chief of the Turkish General Staff Gen. Necdet Ozel, also had a meeting with Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu.
Replying to a question on letters including accusations against Turkey sent by Syria to the UN Secretariat, Unal said that it was not new, and Syrian foreign ministry distributed such letters for other countries as well in the UN.
Syrian regime was expected to end its operations and violence to its own people, he said, adding that the regime must firstly take steps to fix the situation in its country.
Regarding a conference on Syria held in Cairo on Monday and attended by foreign ministers of Turkey, Iran and Egypt, he said that such meetings were of great importance and foreign ministers decided to meet again within the scope of the UN General Assembly.
Answering a question, Unal said that Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi would pay a visit to Turkey as soon as possible.
Upon a question on Iran's Supreme National Security Council Chief Saeed Jalili's talks in Turkey, the spokesman said that Jalili had a meeting with Davutoglu on Monday and met with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan today upon a demand by Iran. Jalili would meet with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton in Istanbul on Tuesday, he said.
Responding to another question, Unal said a joint working group has been established in accordance with a consensus reached in the meeting between Davutoglu and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the process was under way.
