LONDON
British Foreign Secretary William Hague stated that ending the conflict in Syria, tackling the issue of Iran's nuclear programme and preventing sexual violence in conflict were the priorities of the UK's foreign policy for 2014.
Hague said, "In 2014 it is vital that we keep the wheels of diplomacy turning towards an end to the conflict in Syria and a comprehensive resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue" in a message released from the foreign office and added in his message that putting an end to the horrors of sexual violence in conflict would be also included in Britain's priorities for 2014.
Touching onto the achievements of UK diplomacy in 2013, Foreign Secretary Hague said that 2013 demonstrated the value and importance of diplomacy, especially on Syria and on Iran. He added, "The UK has shown determination and leadership, including through our G8 Presidency, our strong support for the Arms Trade Treaty, and our championing of the cause of preventing sexual violence in conflict."
In addition, the UK will be hosting the 2014 NATO Summit in Wales on September 4-5. Moreover, in 2014 Scots will be asking themselves "Should Scotland be an independent country?" at the ballot box on September 18.
