Syria mortar kills 1 in Turkey

SANLIURFA (AA) - A mortar fired from Syria hit an apartment building in Turkey close to the border, killing a father and injuring his daughter in the town of Ceylanpinar.

The incident early Monday halted education for the day in the town which faces Ras al-Ayn in northern Syria, home to intermittent clashes between Kurdish group Democratic Union Party (PYD) and al-Qaeda-linked opposition factions.

Idris Akgul, 33, was at home with his daughter Derya in the early hours of Monday when the mortar blasted their home. Mr Akgul died on the scene while Derya was hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.

Turkey's Syria border has seen several instances over the recent months of stray bullets and artillery fire causing casualties and material damage in the Turkish territory. The last was as recent as a week ago when a mortar shell fell on an empty field in the southernmost border town of Yayladagi in Hatay.
