KONYA
A high school student in Turkey's central Anatolian province of Konya, arrested for allegedly insulting the Turkish president, has been released, the penal court of peace ruled Friday.
The 16-year-old boy was taken into custody by police from school one day after he made a speech on Tuesday at a park during commemoration of Turkish soldier Kubilay, who died in 1930 in a rally that promoted the restoration of Islamic law and that criticized the secularist policies of the Turkish republic.
Baris Ispir, the boy's lawyer, earlier told The Anadolu Agency that the arrest was against the law.
Konya Bar President Fevzi Kayacan had also said the arrest was "clearly not legal."
