ANKARA
Indian Embassy in Ankara organized a fashion show to support women's causes and to celebrate International Women's Day on Friday.
The preview and the sale of Sarees were held before the fashion show which took place at the embassy's residence in Turkish capital Ankara.
Indian Ambassador in Ankara, Susmita Thomas Gongulee informed AA about the traditional Indian clothing, Sarees stressed that the income from the Saree sales would be donated to organizations which support women's shelters.
Ambassador Thomas explained, the use of Sarees in India and the sub-continent countries including, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and in Middle East countries are popular as well.
"Sarees are average of 8 metres long and there are about 100 different styles of Sarees across India. Their styles vary from region to region," said Thomas.
Furthermore, Ambassador Thomas noted, Sarees which went on sale at the fashion show were specifically brought from India for the event.
"The most expensive factory made Saree would be 50 USD however, handmade ones go up to $5,000," underlined Indian ambassador.
She said that the most expensive Sarees would be designer ones and added, their prices go up to $17,000.
The most elegant and stylish Sarees have weaved with thread dipped in gold water, said Thomas.
Sarees which have embroidered with heavy stones and beads are usually worn during special occasions and celebrations.
Alongside the Indian Ambassador Thomas, Tulay Yilmaz, the wife of Turkey's Development Minister Cevdet Yilmaz, Hatice Ipek, the wife of AK Party's Secretary General Haluk Ipek, spouses of the ambassadors of Australia, Egypt, South Africa, Slovakia, Canada, Denmark and Portugal, representatives of firms, academics and many other guests attended the fashion show.
