ANKARA
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu urged the Democratic Union Party (PYD), Syria's Kurdish party, to decide whether to stand with the Syrian regime or the opposition.
Before his departure to Myanmar on Wednesday Davutoglu told a press conference that the PYD must adopt a certain attitude.
"The PYD must not adopt an opportunist attitude by supporting the Assad regime one day and the Syrian opposition another day," Davutoglu said.
The Syrian opposition decided to attend the Geneva 2 Conference on Tuesday while the PYD announced the same day the formation of a transitional autonomous government.
Exhibiting an attitude which would cause division means playing with fire, said Davutoglu referring to the PYD's declaration of an interim administration.
The PYD is a dominant force on the ground in Syria's Kurdish areas and is aligned with the PKK.
- Davutoglu to visit Myanmar
Davutoglu has left for Myanmar to represent Turkey along with the representatives of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a grouping of 57 Islamic countries and the world’s biggest Islamic political bloc to discuss the recent outbreak of violence against the Muslim minority in Myanmar with the leaders of Myanmar.
Scores were killed and tens of thousands more were displaced in 2012. Described by the UN as being among the most persecuted people in the world, there were more than 125,000 internally displaced persons in the Rakhine (Arakan) state by the end of 2012 alone. Rakhine state is one of the most impoverished and densely populated areas of Myanmar, and the waves of violence in the region have worsened conditions substantially.
Rohingya Muslims face persecution as Myanmar authorities consider them "undocumented immigrants" and do not recognize them as citizens or as an ethnic group.
The delegation will include participants from Malaysia, Indonesia, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh as well as Turkey.
Davutoglu said he will also hold bilateral talks in Myanmar.
"We will visit both Muslim and Buddhist camps," Davutoglu said. "Myanmar is an important country to Turkey and we will do our part to help the Muslim minority there."
