Five police officers released on bail after being held in connection to the alleged wiretapping of the Turkish Prime Minister’s office are to be rearrested, a Turkish court has ruled.
Judges at the Ankara 10th High Criminal Court decided on Tuesday that the five - Ali Ozdogan, Sedat Zavar, Ahmet Turer, Enes Cigci and Ilker Usta - who were freed on judicial bail after appearing in court last Friday, should be apprehended, following a demand by Prosecutor Durak Cetin.
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously strongly criticized the release of police officers connected to the case.
"I am addressing the Turkish judiciary, while all those documents and devices are obvious, they are released on judicial bail. I have a clear objection to that," Erdogan said on Sunday.
Wiretapping scandals have occasionally made headlines in Turkey since Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced in late 2012 that a "bug" had been found in his office.
The bugging devices, the serial numbers of which had been erased, were sent to the prosecutor in May.
