ANKARA
A rapporteur for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has said Turkey successfully conducts the process of writing a new constitution.
"We see that the new constitution process is on track. The method used in this process is a good one. With quite a different approach, a commission comprising of equal number of members from the political parties represented at the parliament works on the subject. This really reflects the will to work with harmony and consensus," said Josette Durrieu, PACE's Rapporteur on Turkey, during a press conference in Ankara.
EU to encourage Turkey's efforts on new constitution
Moreover, EU is preparing to welcome Turkey's efforts to make a new constitution in the 50th Turkey-EU Association Council meeting in Brussels set to be held on Friday.
A draft document of the EU will note the 27-nation bloc's satisfaction with government's efforts to include both political parties and NGOs in the process of drafting the new constitution.
The document said the new constitution was an important opportunity.
It said priorities have been addressed, including the civilian oversight of security forces, the reform of the judiciary, freedom of religion and the observance of international human rights law.
Terrorist attacks in Turkey were condemned in the draft document which expressed solidarity with Turkish people.
