Lucky punter scoops Turkish visa prize

ANKARA

One lucky visitor to Turkey had to be convinced by the country's foreign ministry that she had won a prize for being the one millionth user of Turkey's 'e-visa' system.

London resident Priyanka Katara was the one millionth person to use the downloadable visa, winning a round-trip ticket from the U.K. capital to Istanbul.

According to Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Naci Koru's blog, the winner could not believe she had won a prize and the ministry had to convince her.

Koru said that if the pace of use continues, Turkey will issue its ten millionth e-visa in a short time.

The system enables foreign nationals to obtain a Turkish visa online, thereby avoiding having to wait in queues at embassies, consulates or border crossings.

The largest number of visa applicants has come from Iraq, followed by the United Kingdom and the United States.
