ANKARA
The halving of the time spent by people in custody in Turkey awaiting trial - from ten years to five - announced by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday is a huge step for Turkey, said Turkish Deputy PM Besir Atalay on Wednesday.
There are 149 people in Turkish jails who have been in custody for more than 5 years according to various press reports.
"Trials are expected to be conducted fast and justly in a credible judicial system," said Atalay, calling slow justice a type of cruelty.
