ANKARA
Izmir, a candidate city to host EXPO 2020, will adopt a quite different shape through implementing new projects to develop the city's outlook while the countdown starts for vote on Wednesday.
According to the construction plan of Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, EXPO arena will be assessed as a city park which will include fields for recreation, beach park, sports, game and entertainment at the end of fair construction.
Izmir will gain a new characteristic with projects on transportation, infrastructure planning and urban transformation in the event of being elected for EXPO 2020, say ministry officials.
In specific, the officials say the shanty on the route of Adnan Menderes Airport will be removed and planning and project designing efforts have been sustained in Karabaglar district of Izmir as well.
While various policies and strategies are being produced so as to increase life quality in the city within the scope of EXPO, use of renewable and green energy sources will be enabled, say the ministry.
In addition, efforts aiming to decrease the carbon footprint will be conducted and products and services with low carbon emission will be preferred.
Officials will also enable dissemination of mass transportation and bicycle alongside planting trees. Technical efforts will be developed concerning energy, drinking water, waste and irrigation water in Izmir as well.
EXPO, also known as world’s fair, gathers people across the world to exhibit ideas and innovations for a better future with a selected theme in each exhibition being organized every five years for six months.
EXPO 2020 İzmir would present the theme of Health for All if selected.
The next one, EXPO 2015, will be held in Milan, as EXPO 2010 was in Shanghai with an attendance of 73 million.
