Turkish President Abdullah Gul has urged all international parties to start an initiative for a "permanent and fair" peace agreement in Gaza.
According to a statement released on Tuesday to coincide with three days of official mourning in Turkey, Gul said without a deal the ongoing tragedy in Gaza, which has seen 590 civilian deaths thus far, would be endlessly repeated.
"Our wish is a quick end to this suffering and no repeat. But today's incidents should not make us forget this reality: Palestinian people have been under occupation and oppression for more than 60 years," said Gul in a press statement.
"[The] Israeli administration's irresponsible and reckless attitude shows today's attacks will not be the last one."
Turkish flags are flying at half-mast, as part of the three days of national mourning started Tuesday to show solidarity with Palestinians against the Israeli campaign on Gaza.
Since July 7, Israel has targeted the coastal enclave with air and naval bombardments with the stated aim of halting Palestinian rocket fire.
Israel stepped up its offensive to include ground operations, sending thousands of troops into the Palestinian territory.
Israel's military intervention, dubbed "Operation Protective Edge," is the country’s third major offensive against the densely-populated Gaza Strip – which is home to some 1.8 million Palestinians – within the last six years.
Urging international parties to push for a quick ceasefire, Gul added: "I am inviting all related sides to once again start a serious and comprehensive initiative for a permanent and fair peace conditions."
“Otherwise, everyone will continue to be harmed in this situation."
