STRASBOURG/ANKARA (AA) – Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a political resolution on Turkey and decided to continue its post-monitoring dialogue with the country.
During its ongoing spring meetings in Strasbourg, the assembly debated the resolution on Turkey which was prepared by French senator Josette Durrieu.
Durrieu said there had been many reforms in Turkey for the past ten years, and added it was also necessary to wait for the results of local and general elections which would take place in 2014 and 2015.
The parliamentarians recognized that a "process of major reform" is taking place and they also hailed Turkey's "very significant economic achievements" in the context of global crisis, pointing out that it has become a regional power.
The Assembly decided to continue its post-monitoring dialogue with Turkey.

Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesman Levent Gumrukcu said Turkey's firm determination shall continue on further improving fundamental rights and freedoms, democratization and the workings of justice.
Commenting on the report of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) on Post-Monitoring Dialogue with Turkey, Gumrukcu recalled that in its session of April 23, PACE debated the report on the post-monitoring dialogue with Turkey, presented by French rapporteur Josette Durrieu.
"The resolution contained in the report which was voted by the plenary session of the PACE evaluates the issues covered by the post-monitoring dialogue process, within the framework of the developments made in Turkey in the field of human rights, democracy and the rule of law, the comprehensive reforms realized, the new Constitution and judicial reforms. By the resolution, it has been decided that, following the next parliamentary and presidential elections, a report be prepared on the post-monitoring dialogue with Turkey," he said.
Gumrukcu added, "Turkey's firm determination shall continue on further improving fundamental rights and freedoms, democratization and the workings of justice."
