Avianca Brazil, based in Sao Paulo, has made a codeshare agreement with Turkish Airlines for flights between Sao Paulo and Istanbul and beyond, Turkish Airlines said in a statement Thursday.
A codeshare agreement is when two or more airlines agree to list certain flights in a reservation system under each other's names.
Under the terms of the agreement signed during a Star Alliance Chief Executive Board meeting held in Chicago, the U.S., on Wednesday, Turkish Airlines will distribute its passengers on Avianca Brazil flights beyond Sao Paulo under the TK code.
The Brazilian company will offer its customers access to Istanbul and connections to several destinations in the world.
Customers of both carriers, which are Star Alliance members, will benefit by earning points on miles from these flights.
Currently, Turkish Airlines operates 7 weekly flights between Istanbul and Sao Paulo. The agreement allows both airlines to reinforce their existing cooperation and enable the passengers to find more flight options.
“The agreement will contribute to Avianca Brazil as a reliable partner of Star Alliance in Brazil and grant the passengers the privilege of flying safely and comfortably,” Jose Efromovich, Avianca Brazil CEO said.
Temel Kotil, CEO of Turkish Airlines said: “We are very pleased to sign the codeshare agreement with Avianca Brazil. With this agreement, more opportunities will be offered to our passengers through the networks of both airlines.”
The agreement will enter into force after receiving necessary permissions from civil aviation authorities.
Turkish Airlines links 283 destinations and more than 100 of them are in Europe. As the only city in the world having settled on two continents, Istanbul serves as a main hub which connects the east and the west.
The deal offers the transcontinental advantages and makes connecting flights to destinations throughout Europe and the Middle East easier than ever for Avianca Brazil passengers.
