Yusuf Yerkel, a chief assistant to Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has been dismissed from his post as of 21 May 2014, Prime Ministry sources said Saturday.

Yerkel, who had been working on the post for three years, will reportedly be assigned to another post. The sources gave no information on who will replace him.

A photograph emerged last week showing Yerkel attacking a protester who was already on the ground after being restrained by the police. The protester is claimed to be a relative of one of the dead miners in last week's mine fire disaster which has claimed 301 lives.
