Turkey hopes the U.S. administration to retract its recent decision on Jerusalem, the country’s prime minister said on Friday.

Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Binali Yildirim said the UN General Assembly's clear-cut rejection of the U.S. decision on Jerusalem was “a clear message to the U.S.”.

The UN's 193-member General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution on Jerusalem by an overwhelming majority, calling on the U.S. to withdraw its recognition of the city as Israel's capital.

A total of 128 members voted in favor of the Jerusalem resolution, nine countries voted against and 35 others abstained. Twenty-one countries did not cast a vote.

“I hope the U.S. administration will evaluate this decision the right way and will give up [pursuing] this wrong decision as soon as possible,” he said.

“Turkey will follow this issue," he added.

Our goal is "to side with those who are right," the premier said. "It is both against our tradition and our understanding of the law to side with those who are powerful."
