Somali-Canadian MP Ahmed Hussen has learned during his visit to Turkey that he was appointed as the Minister of Immigration in Canada, a Turkish mayor said on Thursday.

Ahmed Hussen, who won the favor of the Turkish people by standing in solidarity during the July 15th Democracy Meetings in Istanbul squares, was appointed Tuesday to position of Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship by the Canadian Government, Deputy Mayor of Istanbul’s Pendik Municipality, Sami Divleli told Anadolu Agency.

Divleli said that Hussen came to Turkey as the guest of the Pendik Municipality on Jan. 6, to see the municipal services for the Syrian refugees. However, Hussen had to cut his trip short after he received a call from the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

“Mr. Hussen visited Istanbul to view firsthand what Turkey has done for Syrian refugees. He was accompanied by the Turkish Ambassador to Canada Mr. Selcuk Unal and Consul General of Turkey in Toronto Mr. Erdeniz Sen,” Divleli said.

He added that Hussen is the first Somali-Canadian MP and is known for his dedicated work towards social activities in his country.

The deputy mayor quoted Hussen as saying “Turkey does what the others don't. Turkey opened its doors to 3.5 million humans affected by war. Turkey has provided housing and food to these guests, as well as focused on the children's future by providing an education in a safe environment."

“Syrian children are hopeful for the future by means of the Pendik Municipality despite having lost almost everything,” Divleli added.

Divleli also said that Pendik Mayor Kenan Sahin briefed Hussen about the ongoing projects and efforts made for the Syrian individuals in Turkey.
