JERUSALEM
A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli forces early Tuesday following overnight clashes between Israeli troops and Palestinian youths in a refugee camp near Jerusalem.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that the death had occurred in the Qalandiya refugee camp.
According to Israeli Hebrew-language daily Yedioth Ahronoth, clashes erupted after Israeli soldiers mistakenly entered the camp.
The Israeli military, for its part, said crowds of Palestinian youth in the camp had attacked -- and later torched -- the soldiers’ military vehicle, continuing to throw rocks and Molotov cocktails even after the soldiers were extricated from the area.
The Israeli army could not confirm why the military vehicle had entered the area.
Palestinian news agency Ma'an identified the slain Palestinian as 22-year-old Iyad Omar Sajadiyya, a journalism student from the Qalandiya camp.
According to Palestinian figures, at least 187 Palestinians have been killed since the current uptick in Israeli-Palestinian violence began on Oct. 1 of last year.
Israel, for its part, says at least 31 Israeli citizens and foreigners have been killed in attacks by Palestinians over the same period.
