Legendary baseball catcher Yogi Berra, whose humorous quotes made him one of the most beloved figures in sports, has died. He was 90.

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that Yogi Berra passed away Tuesday night at the age of 90," the Yogi Berra Museum said in a statement early Wednesday morning.

Berra, who established several records for catchers in his era, died from natural causes, according to media reports.

"While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with mom. We celebrate his remarkable life, and are thankful he meant so much to so many. He will truly be missed," his family said in a statement.

Berra was well-known for his amusing adages known as “Yogi-isms".

Examples include statements such as "It ain't over 'til it's over", “It’s deja vu all over again”, “You can observe a lot by watching”, “Baseball is 90 percent mental, the other half is physical" and "I always thought that record would stand until it was broken."

During his lengthy playing career with the New York Yankees, he held the records for most home runs by a catcher, most consecutive errorless games and most consecutive chances handled.

Following his death, the Yankees tweeted: "We have lost an icon.”
