GENEVA
UEFA has rejected Fenerbahce's complaint over the inclusion of midfielder Fred in Shakhtar Donetsk’s lineup for last Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier despite allegations of doping.
The governing body of European football rejected Fenerbahce's complaint, a UEFA official told Anadolu Agency correspondent on Tuesday.
Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu let Brazilian midfielder Frederico Rodrigues Santos – who plays under the moniker ‘Fred’ – take part in the 0-0 first-leg draw in Turkey despite doping allegations.
Despite UEFA's decision, Fred is not expected to play in the second leg against Fenerbahce on Wednesday.
The Brazil Football Confederation confirmed on July 31 that the midfielder failed a doping test during the Copa America tournament.
Fenerbahce will face Shakhtar in the second leg in Lviv, Ukraine on Wednesday.
