A jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during his final championship season with the Chicago Bulls has sold for $12.26 million, according to auction house Joopiter.
Jordan wore the white No. 23 jersey during Game 3 of the 1998 NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz, part of the season later immortalized as “The Last Dance.”
The jersey was offered by entrepreneur Ryan Gough and sold through Joopiter, the digital auction platform founded by musician Pharrell Williams. Its estimated value before the sale was between $10 million and $15 million.
The June 7, 1998, game was played at Chicago’s United Center with the series tied at 1-1. Jordan recorded 24 points, three rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block as the Bulls defeated the Jazz 96-54.
Utah’s 54 points remain the lowest total recorded by a team in an NBA Finals game. The victory gave Chicago control of the series, which the Bulls eventually won 4-2 to claim their sixth championship in eight seasons.
Jordan was named NBA Finals Most Valuable Player for a sixth time.
Joopiter described the jersey as one of the most significant pieces of game-worn sporting history to reach the market.
“Few objects in the history of sport embody greatness as completely,” the auction house said, adding that the jersey represented the end of an era that helped transform basketball into a global cultural phenomenon.
According to Joopiter, only four jerseys from Bulls victories in the 1998 Finals exist. The Game 3 jersey is the only publicly known white game-winning jersey from the series to have surfaced.
The sale surpassed the previous record for Jordan memorabilia, set in 2022 when the red jersey he wore during Game 1 of the same Finals sold at Sotheby’s for $10.091 million.
Jordan’s customized 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello was also sold by Joopiter for $2.7 million. The vehicle, which was reportedly out of public view for 24 years, had specially modified seat rails to accommodate Jordan’s 6-foot-6-inch frame.
Despite setting a record for Jordan's memorabilia, the Game 3 jersey remains well below the highest price paid for game-worn sports memorabilia.
That record belongs to the jersey worn by baseball great Babe Ruth during his celebrated “called shot” appearance in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series. It sold for $24.12 million in 2024.
