American golfer Tiger Woods, who met a car accident on Tuesday, underwent a "long surgical procedure on his lower right leg" and is recovering in hospital.

"Mr. Woods suffered significant orthopaedic injuries to his right lower extremity that were treated during emergency surgery by Orthopaedic trauma specialist at Harbor-UCLA Medical," Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer and interim CEO at Harbor-UCLA Medical, said in a statement shared on Wood's Twitter account on Wednesday.

"Comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilised by inserting a rod into the tibia. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling," he added.

The statement said that the 45-year-old golfer is "awake" and "responsive."

Woods suffered a serious accident after his car rolled over after hitting the center divider and crashed into a tree in Rolling Hills Estates, California on Tuesday.
