GENEVA
One of the seven FIFA officials arrested two weeks ago is fighting his extradition to the U.S. on corruption charges, the Swiss Justice Ministry said on Wednesday.
The Federal Office of Justice did not name the individual but said he had lodged an appeal against the extradition warrant with a court in Bellinzona, close to the Italian border.
"The Federal Criminal Court will rule on whether or not he will have to remain in custody for the entire length of the extradition proceeding," the ministry said in a statement.
The U.S. Department of Justice recently indicted 14 individuals on charges of racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering that involved world football’s governing body.
Seven were arrested in Zurich and the U.S is seeking their extradition. Four others had already been charged.
The case has sent shockwaves around the world, forcing long-time FIFA President Sepp Blatter to announce his resignation.
