The American beat Australia's Maddison Inglis 7-5, 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
Ukraine's Elina Svitolina won 6-3, 7-6 against Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, while Australia's Ashleigh Barty thumped Montenegrin Danka Kovinic 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the next stage.
World No. 2 Rafael Nadal beat Serbian Laslo Djere in straight sets – 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 – to enter the second round in the men's singles.
Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas also progressed with a clinical 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gilles Simon from France.
