Australian Open: Top seeds move to 2nd round

Defending champion Sofia Kenin was among several big names who moved to the second round of the Australian Open with comfortable wins on Tuesday.

The American beat Australia's Maddison Inglis 7-5, 6-4 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.

Ukraine's Elina Svitolina won 6-3, 7-6 against Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic, while Australia's Ashleigh Barty thumped Montenegrin Danka Kovinic 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the next stage.

World No. 2 Rafael Nadal beat Serbian Laslo Djere in straight sets – 6-3, 6-4, 6-1 – to enter the second round in the men's singles.

Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas also progressed with a clinical 6-1, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gilles Simon from France.
