Turkey's Deputy Transport and Infrastructure Minister Omer Fatih Sayan on Wednesday stressed the importance and need for data privacy and information security.

"We cannot watch technology becoming a crime tool and risk to public order,” he told audience at a conference titled “International Conference on Big Data Applications”.

“It's not free for all in democracy. Spreading lies in the dark is destruction. We cannot let that happen,” Sayan said.

The conference was organized by the Information Security Association, the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) and Ankara’s Gazi University.

Sayan underlined that while big data was beneficial in many areas, it has some risks as well.

Stressing the importance of ensuring data privacy and security, Sayan said: “No one can guarantee that the technology power that we use will not turn into a pressure tool on us one day.”

He said, while focusing making technologies to make lives easier, there was also need to make them more accessible and secure.
