WASHINGTON, D.C.
The United States has expressed concern over Egypt’s restrictive political environment amid the presidential election which was held there last week.
On Wednesday, the White House released a statement saying that the U.S. shared international observers' concern about Egypt’s political environment in which the presidential contest took place.
“We have consistently expressed our concerns about limits on freedom of peaceful assembly, association, and expression and call upon the government to ensure these freedoms as well as due process rights for all Egyptians,” the U.S. statement read.
“As Egypt looks toward parliamentary elections later this year, we urge the government to consider the recommendations of the observer groups on ways to improve the administration of future elections” the White House added.
The White House also congratulated the controversial new Egyptian leader, Abdelfattah al-Sisi, who led the military coup that was staged last August.
“The United States looks forward to working with Abdelfattah al-Sisi, the winner of Egypt's presidential election, to advance our strategic partnership and the many interests shared by the United States and Egypt," the statement read.
According to statement, the U.S. also underlined its full support for the democratic aspirations of the Egyptian people and said that the United States would “stand with Egyptians as they pursue the future that they deserve”.
