UN disbands fact-finding mission into Olenivka prison attack in Ukraine

UNITED NATIONS

The UN said Thursday it is disbanding its fact-finding mission into the Olenivka prison attack, citing a lack of access.

''The Secretary General has decided to disband his fact-finding mission regarding the 29 July 2022 incident at Olenivka Ukraine, in the absence of conditions required for the deployment of the mission to the site,'' UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters.

More than 53 Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed in the attack. Russia and Ukraine have accused each other of launching the attack on the prison in the Donetsk province controlled by Russian-backed separatists where Ukrainian prisoners were being held.

The establishment of the fact-finding mission was announced Aug. 3, following requests from Ukraine and Russia.
