British Prime Minister David Cameron backed Barack Obama after the US President announced he was seeking congressional support to launch military action in Syria.
"I understand and support Barack Obama's position on Syria," Cameron said on his official Twitter feed.
Obama had said he would seek the vote of the US Congress for military action against Syria.
Cameron's plans for Britain to join a possible military strike were thwarted on Thursday when parliament voted against a government motion to authorise such action in principle.
Top US officials have said intelligence reports show the Syrian government is responsible for the chemical weapons attack that they say violates international norms and have called for forceful response against Damascus, which denies any involvement.
