KIEV, Ukraine
Ukraine's navy chief defected Sunday to the country's Crimea autonomous republic only a day after he was appointed as the head of the naval forces.
Rear Admiral Denis Berezovsky swore allegiance to the Crimea region in a press appearance in Sevastopol alongside the region's local prime minister, Sergey Aksenov.
Ukraine's interim defense minister has said Berezovsky was sacked and treason charges were pressed against him. Admiral Sergey Hayduk was appointed to replace Berezovsky.
