STRASBOURG
European lawmakers have called for targeted EU sanctions against Ukraine's government and those involved in violent pro-EU demonstrations.
A non-binding resolution said the European Union and member states should consider preparing sanctions on travel bans and the freezing of EU assets for those responsible for killing Ukrainian protesters.
MEPs have also urged Russia to respect the rights of Ukrainian citizens to decide the future of their country, while also calling for EU financial support for Ukraine.
MEPs have also asked for an EU "long-term package of concrete financial support for Ukraine" and say that a support package should be offered to a credible new interim government to alleviate the tight payments situation.
MEPs say that they regret the recently adopted Ukrainian amnesty, which has turned "victims into hostages" and have asked for an unconditional release of all protesters.
Citing requests from Ukrainian citizens, activists and politicians, MEPs have asked the European Parliament’s Conference of Presidents (EP President and political group leaders) to establish a permanent mission of MEPs in Ukraine as soon as possible, in order to facilitate dialogue between all of the parties.
