TRIPOLI
An appeals court in Libyan capital Tripoli on Sunday adjourned until March 22 the trial of 37 figures of the regime of late Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi, including his son, Seif al-Islam, local media has reported.
The trial judge said the postponement was requested by the defendants' lawyers and the prosecution alike, Tripoli's television, which is run by the government of the Libyan capital, added.
Quoting the judge, the television noted that Gaddafi's son, who remains in detention at a prison in the western mountainous Zintan region, and the 36 other defendants faced charges of committing mass murder during the Feb. 17, 2011 uprising that led to the downfall of the Gaddafi regime.
Other key defendants in the case include Gaddafi's spymaster Abdullah Senussi, his prime minister Baghdadi Mahmudi and his foreign minister Abdull Ati-Obeidi.
Seif al-Islam is being tried on charges of undermining his country's security as well.
The International Criminal Court also accuses the son of the late Libyan leader of committing crimes against humanity.
