WASHINGTON
The Senate passed short-term legislation Saturday to extend current government spending levels through Wednesday, offsetting a potential government shutdown.
Senators have been deliberating a $1.1 trillion spending bill that was passed in the House late Thursday night, and have been working to confirm dozens of President Barack Obama's nominees, including Tony Blinken, who has been awaiting confirmation to become the No. 2 at the State Department since early November.
Without the stopgap measure, government funding was set to run out Saturday at midnight. It will now go to President Barack Obama to be signed into law.
A final vote on the spending bill is expected no later than Monday.
