WASHINGTON
A series of satirical ads have gone up around America’s most populous city, making humorous jabs at Islamophobia while promoting a 2013 film.
The six ads started going up earlier this week around New York’s subway stations after a federal judge ruled against the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which had opposed putting up the ads for what it said was the campaign’s violation of a ban on political messaging.
Judge Colleen McMahon ruled otherwise in October, opening the way for the ads’ display. “The Ugly Truth About Muslims: Muslims have great frittata recipes,” reads one of the posters.
Another has a list of “facts” about Muslims including: Muslims invented the concept of a hospital, Grownup Muslims can do more pushups than baby Muslims, and Muslims invented Justin Timberlake.
Below the “facts” is a brief disclaimer: “Well, the thing about the hospitals is true, the other two might be kinda true.”
The ads were jointly created by comedians Negin Farsad and Dean Obeidallah to promote their documentary, The Muslims Are Coming!
