RAMALLAH
A senior Palestinian official in the West Bank died Wednesday after inhaling teargas used by Israeli police to disperse a demonstration against the Israeli occupation, a medical official said.
Ziad Abu Ein, the official in charge of the settlements file at the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), "died after being suffocated by teargas," the head of the Ramallah medical complex told The Anadolu Agency.
An AA correspondent at the scene said that Abu Ein had passed out during a scuffle with Israeli army troops as the latter tried to disperse an anti-occupation demonstration staged by Palestinian activists in the northern West Bank town of Turmus Ayya.
During the protests, the Israeli army fired teargas to disperse the gathering, causing dozens of demonstrators to suffer temporary asphyxiation.
Abu Ein was rushed to the Ramallah medical complex in critical condition, according to AA's correspondent.
