ATHENS
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, on his Athens visit, urged the Ukrainian government on Friday to undertake necessary measures to prevent the army’s intervention in the ongoing crisis in Kiev.
At a joint press conference between Rasmussen and Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, Rasmussen said, “The Ukrainian military and special forces should not turn on the people of Ukraine. This would have severe consequences for our partnership with Ukraine. The only way forward is dialogue. So I welcome all efforts to find a peaceful solution.”
Rasmussen also said “I condemn the outrageous bloodshed in Ukraine. I urge all parties to stop this tragic spiral of violence".
Rasmussen’s Athens visit included an informal meeting with EU defense ministers.
