TRIPOLI
The Constitutional Court on Monday dismissed as "unconstitutional" the interim parliament's recent election of Ahmed Maiteeq as new prime minister of Libya.
Libyan Deputy Parliament Speaker Ezz Eddin al-Awami told Anadolu Agency last week that Maiteeq's election was flawed because he had failed to secure the necessary number of votes to win the premiership.
In earlier statements, al-Awami had said that Maiteeq had only the support of 113 MPs when he needed the votes of 120 – out of a current 182 members – to be endorsed as premier.
Maiteeq, who enjoys the support of Libya's Islamist bloc, succeeds Abdullah al-Thinni, as caretaker prime minister who had refused to form a new government.
The Maiteeq cabinet won the parliament's confidence last month with the support of 83 out of 93 MPs attending the session.
But the caretaker government refused to formally hand over to Maiteeq's cabinet questioning its legitimacy.
