TEHRAN
Iran’s news agency is reporting new cases of corruption – with one worth an estimated $2 billion.
IRNA, Iran's official news agency, reported on Wednesday that the country’s judicial chief, Ayatollah Sadegh Amoli Larijani, stated that new corruption cases had been filed.
“One of these cases involves a person being loaned a grant worth 65 trillion Iran rials (about $2 billion),” said Larijani, adding that the loan had been granted by a private bank and was not backed by the necessary guarantee.
“We believe that a portion of the money was sent in a foreign currency abroad,” he claimed.
In December 2014, Iranian finance minister Ali Taieb Nia said that they had detected approximately $3.5 billion in corruption in the banking system.
On Sunday, Iran’s former vice president, Mohammad Reza Rahimi, was brought to a prison in Tehran, to serve a five-year term after being charged with corruption.
