WASHINGTON
US President Barack Obama said on Monday that İt is not an appropriate time to impose new sanctions on Iran because of its nuclear program, urging Congress to "give diplomacy a chance."
Speaking to Congress on Monday, President Obama said: “İt’s going to be difficult, it’s going to be challenging, but ultimately, this is how diplomacy should work."
"My preference is for peace and diplomacy, and this is one of the reasons why İ've sent the message to Congress."
An interim agreement relating to İran’s nuclear program was reached in Geneva on 24 November 2013, following negotiations with the group of world powers known as P5+1 - US, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany.
The interim agreement will be active as of 20 January and easing of some international sanctions on İran are expected to follow.
Last month Obama said that he would veto legislation to impose new sanctions on Iran stating that it could endanger nuclear negotiations with the country.
