BERLIN
German President Joachim Gauck on Thursday called for the reform of United Nations Security Council, saying it will be an "important sign for the legitimacy of the committee."
In a speech at the Nehru University in New Delhi, India, Gauck said Germany should take more responsibility on the world stage.
“UN Security Council should reflect the realities of today’s world, not of 1945. Everybody should come to terms that the committee needs to be reformed and Germany and India are hopeful that the reform will take place,” he said.
Gauck’s call came two days after Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for the reform of the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday, saying that permanent members were obstructing humanitarian aid from getting to Syria.
Erdogan - speaking at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin - said that although the UN is the largest peace organization in the world, it cannot take essential steps "primarily due to the inaction of permanent members of the UN Security Council."
