German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone call on Sunday to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
"Both agree that Ukraine should quickly form an effective government and that its territorial integrity needs to be guaranteed," government spokesman, Steffen Seibert said in a written statement.
Seibert said that Merkel and Putin had reiterated their shared interest in guaranteeing the political and economic stability of the country.
Merkel also spoke with Ukrainian opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko after her release from prison, the statement said.
Merkel reportedly told Tymoshenko that she needed to be actively involved in helping Ukraine reconcile and move forward after months of violent political unrest.
