PARIS
French jets bombed Daesh targets in Iraq for the first time Wednesday after France's nuclear powered aircraft carrier, Charles de Gaulle, joined the U.S.-led coalition operations against the terrorist group two days ago.
Four Rafael fighter jets took off from the carrier to strike Daesh, French television news channel BFM said.
Charles de Gaulle had moved from France's southern Toulon city towards the Gulf in early January.
France is among the first countries that joined the U.S.-led coalition of mainly Western and Arab states, which was formed in August after Daesh swept across northern Iraq, seizing large swathes of territory in the country as well as in neighboring Syria.
Daesh is the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant terrorist group.
