European Council President Donald Tusk has said he will pressure the European Parliament to allow EU member states to share data of airline passengers.
Tusk’s comments come in the aftermath of a deadly attack on a French satirical magazine in Paris that killed 12 people Wednesday.
''Next week in Strasbourg, I will appeal to the European Parliament to speed up work on the EU’s Passenger Name Record system, which can help in detecting the travel of dangerous people,'' the European Council president said during a visit to Latvia Friday.
''Having spoken to President Hollande yesterday evening, I intend to use the meeting of heads of state and government on Feb. 12 to discuss more broadly the response the EU can bring to these challenges,'' Tusk added.
About the Charlie Hebdo attack, Tusk said on Wednesday: ''The European Union cannot do everything, but it can contribute to strengthening our security. In reaction to 9/11, the EU developed the European Arrest Warrant. But we need to do more.''
