ANKARA
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon discussed on Sunday the situation in Syria and the Cyprus issue over phone.
According to diplomatic sources, Davutolgu and Ban Ki-moon exchanged views about Geneva 2 conference, which will be held on January 22.
The two diplomats expressed their satisfaction over Syrian National Coalition participation in the Geneva 2 talks, which aims to find a political solution to the longstanding conflict in Syria.
However, Davutoglu and Ban Ki-moon shared their concern about the continuing conflict in the region and the Syrian regime’s attack on Aleppo, in particular.
The two diplomats drew attention to the improvement of the humanitarian situation in the country and emphasized that a special attention should be given to this issue at the Geneva 2 talks.
Davutoglu and Ban Ki-moon also discussed the Cyprus issue and expressed their common views for the beginning of the negotiations between two parts of the island.
Brokered by the US and Russia, the Geneva 2 conference is set to bring both sides of the major conflict together, as the main opposition group, the Syrian National Coalition, agreed to attend on Saturday after months of reluctance to commit.
More than 100,000 people have been killed in three years of conflict which also internally displayed more than 6.5 million people. Over two million are now registered as refugees in the neighboring countries, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
