Danish Foreign Minister Villy Sovndal handed in his resignation to Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt on Tuesday.
The Foreign Minister made this decision on his doctor's advice after he underwent surgery for a blood clot in the heart on October 22, 2013, according to his written statement.
"The final medical exam Tuesday morning revealed that the he had recovered from the surgery but that it would be unrealistic to continue as Foreign Minister due to the demands of the job," according to the statement issued regarding Sovndal's illness.
Sovndal accepting his fate said that "It was a difficult decision, but it is the right decision for me and my family."
Villy Sovndal's decision took effect immediately. In the last month this is the third resignation of a Danish minister.
In the same week another Danish minister resigned on December 11. Justice Minister Morten Bodskov resigned after admitting he lied to the parliament regarding his involvement in cancelling a parliamentary visit to Christiania.
On November 21, Danish Minister of Foreign Aid Christian Friis Bach announced his resignation after allegations of lying to the parliament about the scandal surrounding the international climate organisation GGGI.
