UNITED NATIONS
Russia's Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin claimed that Syrian opposition had used chemical weapons back in March in Aleppo in their fighting.
Churkin told reporters Tuesday that evidences found after the investigation of Russian experts were presented to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
Ambassador Churkin explained, "The use of it was established on March 19 by the rebels as they launched an unguided Basha'ir-3 projectile towards Khan al-Assal -- controlled by the government forces -- near Aleppo in northern Syria in which 26 people were killed."
Ban appointed a delegation headed by Ake Sellstrom to launch a technical investigation to determine whether chemical weapons were used in Syria as previously the Syrian government made an application to the UN over the same claim.
With new arguments, the Syrian opposition filed an application to the Secretary General and demanded for investigation into the claims. France and Britain also demanded a further investigation over those claims.
On the other hand, the Syrian regime only asked for the claims to be investigated in the Khan al-Assal region and did not let investigation to carry on in other parts of the country.
Sellstrom is expected to come to New York this week and inform Secretary General Ban in regards to the latest developments.
US statement noted previously that there were no evidence of opposition forces using chemical weapons yet there were traces of the Syrian regime had used it more than once.
