RAMALLAH, Palestine
President Mahmoud Abbas was invited by his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to attend the annual commemoration of Russia's victory over Nazi Germany next month, Palestine's envoy to Moscow said Sunday.
"President Abbas received an invitation from Putin to participate in marking the 70th anniversary of Russia's victory over the Nazis next month, which reflects the depth of the Russian-Palestinian relations," Palestine's envoy to Moscow Faed Mustafa said told the Palestinian radio.
"Some 30 world leaders will take part in the event, which will present an opportunity for Abbas to discuss the plight of our people to an international crowd," Mustafa said.
The PA president will also highlight that "humanity's major victory over the Nazis is not sufficient as the Palestinian people remain under [Israeli] occupation," Mustafa added.
Earlier this month, Abbas travelled to Russia on an official visit and met with several Russian officials, during which he announced that Putin "is expected to visit Palestine later," without specifying a date.
On May 9 of every year, Russia – along with a number of former Soviet states – celebrate the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany after World War II.
