PODGORICA (AA) – A survey conducted in Montenegro showed 40 percent of respondents would vote yes for the country's membership in NATO if a referendum is called.
The survey conducted by the Ipsos agency also showed that 39 percent would vote against membership in the alliance, while the remaining percentage of the respondents were still undecided.
According to Marko Uljarevic from Ipsos agency, support for NATO membership has been increasing.
In 2009, 31 percent of the respondents in a similar survey said they support the Montenegrin membership in NATO.
In March, Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen met with Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic and encouraged the country's aspirations towards membership.
In 2009, Montenegro was invited into the Membership Action Plan, a NATO mechanism tailored for hopeful countries. Montenegro expects to become a full member at NATO's next summit in 2014.
