RAMALLAH, Palestine
Scores of Palestinians jailed by Israel have announced the launch of an open-ended hunger strike to protest their arbitrary transfer by Israeli prison authorities and the repressive conditions generally faced by Palestinian detainees, according to a Palestinian NGO.
“120 Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s Nafha Prison [who were recently transferred] announced an open hunger strike on Thursday to demand that they be returned to the prison blocs in which they were previously held,” Qadora Faris, head of the Palestinian Prisoner's Society, an NGO, told Anadolu Agency.
“And within the last 24 hours, another 28 inmates in Israel’s Rimon and Ishel prisons joined the hunger strike,” Faris said.
According to the NGO, some 6,500 Palestinians – including 466 in “administrative detention” (i.e., who haven’t been charged with crimes) – continue to languish in Israeli jails.
